Lightning McQueen #95
, typically referred to by his surname McQueen
, and occasionally called "Stickers
" by Sally, is the main character and is voiced by actor Owen Wilson. He is a generic LeMans racing car from th 1970's. In the beginning of the film, Lightning McQueen, a racing rookie, is an arrogant, talkative car who is very selfish, especially towards his pit crew. He hopes to be the first rookie to win the Piston Cup race and gain a lucrative endorsement deal from Dinoco in the final race of the season, but finishes in a three-way tie with perennial runner-up Chick Hicks and veteran Strip "The King" Weathers after losing his huge lead on the final lap #400 because of two blown tires.
His name appears to be a reference to actor Steve McQueen, who was notorious for his love of fast cars (and co-starred with Paul Newman in many films together), and Glenn McQueen, who was one of Pixar's animators, who died of melanoma in 2002.
The number #95 is a reference to the year 1995, when Toy Story debuted.
Lightning also appears at Disney's California Adventure of Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, CA and Disney MGM Studios of Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, FL along with Mater. They are very unique characters because they are like regular vehicles unlike others.
